Fishing boat rescues luxury cruise ship stranded in remote Greenland bay

The luxury cruise ship Ocean Explorer, which ran aground last Monday in a remote bay in Greenland with more than 200 people on board, was rescued this Thursday by a fishing boat from this autonomous territory of Denmark.

On an adventure expedition to the Alpefjord natural park - the largest in the world - with hardly any maritime traffic and in the middle of a large uninhabited area, the ship became stranded in the silt of the bay about 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) to the north. from Nuuk, the capital.

"We have just freed ourselves... We are absolutely elated," Gina Hill, an Australian passenger on board the ship, told Reuters. The Ocean Explorer listed to one side during the operation and passengers were not allowed on deck, Hill said.

The Danish Army's Joint Arctic Command has confirmed that the ship had been freed by the Tarajoq, a small trawler that took it in tow, after a research vessel made an unsuccessful attempt on Wednesday.

The cruise ship will be taken to a port to assess any damage, while passengers will be flown home, SunStone Maritime Group, the ship's owner, has announced.

"There have been no injuries to anyone on board, no environmental pollution or breakage of the hull," the firm said in a statement.
