Electric scooters prohibited on all trains in Spain

The three railway companies that operate in Spain (Renfe, Ouigo and Iryo) will prohibit access with electric scooters to all their trains starting in December due to the danger of their batteries exploding, especially when they are manipulated to increase speed.

This Tuesday, the French low-cost operator Ouigo joined the announcement made last week by the Spanish company Renfe, which announced the prohibition of uploading these devices to all its trains, both local and regional as well as high-speed and long distance.

For its part, Iryo, with Italian capital, confirmed to EFE that the ban on electric scooters on its trains will be "imminent" and that it is a "matter of days" before it is approved.

The measure will also affect unicycles or any other electric or battery-powered personal mobility device, with the exception of vehicles for people with reduced mobility and electric bicycles.

Seville was the first Spanish city, in 2021, to prevent travelers from entering the Metro with their electric scooters during rush hour on weekdays.

In February 2023, Catalonia prohibited both access to vehicles and public transport infrastructure (stations, platforms) after the explosion of a scooter in the regional railway service in November 2022.

Also since last November 4, the access of electric scooters to public transport facilities and vehicles in the Community of Madrid has been prohibited.

Some railway operators in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and the London or Hamburg Metro have also banned the access of these scooters to their trains.
