Eight floors evacuated due to a large crack in the building adjacent to the one that collapsed in Badalona

Barely a week after the building number 9 on Canigó Street collapsed in Badalona, leaving 3 dead, this Wednesday a large crack appeared in the adjacent block, number 7.

As La Vanguardia has learned, agents from the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Bombers are cordoning off the area. In the emergency operation, twenty floors have been evacuated as a precaution.

The mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, appeared this afternoon and explained that the alarm signal went off when a crack appeared on the 4th and 4th floor and also on the roof of the third.

Firefighters and the Urban Police have inspected the block and have decided to urgently evacuate the entire building, made up of up to 20 homes, due to the risk detected for the health of its occupants.

Emergency teams fear that the cracks could be reproduced on other floors, a fact that currently makes it impossible to guarantee the return home of its occupants.

Most of them have been able to enter with the firefighters to get their basic belongings. According to municipal sources, none of them need to be relocated for now, since they all have the help of family and friends.

Tonight there will be a meeting between those responsible for the Badalona City Council and the residents in which the residents of block number 11 are also called, who have already been warned to be attentive to any cracks.

Furthermore, a meeting between the City Council and the Generalitat is scheduled for next Friday to analyze the actions to be promoted. At the moment there is no closed technical report. When they have concluded, they will be sent to court number 1 of Badalona, which is the one that leads to investigation.

The affected neighbors have explained to La Vanguardia that they are "aware" that the Technical Inspections (IT) of buildings carried out by the Generalitat "is not enough" and they demand "more in-depth studies."
