Do you know why the cross at the end of the church of Santa Anna is a replica?

The terminus crosses are stone monuments that were formerly placed on the paths that announced the entrance to another municipality. Some of these crosses have survived and a very special one is found in the courtyard of the church of Santa Anna. It is a term cross with a very traveled and replicated history.

It turns out that the aforementioned cross does not originate from Barcelona or mark any municipal boundaries. It is of Renaissance style, dated in 1608 and was in the town of Almatret, in the Segrià. At the beginning of the civil war, the sculptor Apel·les Fenosa dismantled it to protect it and deposited it in the monastery of Sant Cugat.

The cross remained there forgotten, to the point that it ended up being unknown its origin. It was then that the rector of Santa Anna claimed it to install it next to the church in the Gòtic neighborhood, where it was inaugurated on April 9, 1944.

In the year 2000, as a result of an act of vandalism carried out by some young people who hung themselves from the cross, it broke. The parish denounced the vandals and one of them, who was injured, also decided to denounce the church for the injuries he suffered, according to him, due to the poor condition of the monument.

The parish won the trial, but the lawsuit uncovered the true identity of the cross and Almatret demanded its restitution. This occurred on December 20, 2005, after the monument was repaired. Since then, it has remained in the Plaza Major in the town of Segrià after almost 70 years of absence. The cross that is currently in the courtyard of Santa Anna is a replica.

On the cross you can see the images of Santa Bàrbara, Sant Pere, Sant Pau, Sant Joan Evangelista, Sant Jaume, Sant Isidre, Sant Roc and Santa Cecília, as well as Jesus Christ.
