Dead that you are dead

Soon the spectacle of tourists jumping from hotel balconies in order to break their heads will come to an end. During the other seasons of the year there are also those who practice it, but, for obvious reasons, summer is the leading season.

Before the season closes, we must remember that, unfortunately, this summer balconing has taken a significant step towards its possible extinction. The Calvià City Council and the United Kingdom consulate have agreed on a proposal that could harm this practice that over the years has become essential to brighten up the muggy summer days.

The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, and the British Consul General, Lloyd Milen, have met with representatives of the local tourism sector to ensure that the Calvià center of Magaluf is a “quality destination”. Everyone is welcome, they say, as long as common sense prevails. Batle says that “the objective is to avoid the word balcony; We want to eradicate it from our vocabulary and we are open to it being a leisure area where people come to have a good time, but within rules that must be met.” The British consul is even more determined. He says that now youth do not jump into the pools from the balconies of their rooms, like decades ago, but rather they fall accidentally. And he adds: “One of the things we can do is not use the word balcony.” Great idea. What expression will replace it? Diving without water? Proposals are accepted.

If we don't call it balcony, is the problem solved? I doubt it. Among politicians, the use of euphemisms to face nothing has a long tradition. The last case was born with the conflict in Ukraine. Instead of calling it war, the Russians call it a "special military operation," but, call it one way or another, the dead are just as dead.
