Concerts, dance and theater to not miss the festivity of May 2 in Madrid

The Community of Madrid celebrates May 2 with an extensive cultural program of performing arts, music, dance, exhibitions, folklore, parades and a historical recreation. The activities will take place in different public spaces and municipalities in the region from April 28 to May 2. In addition, taking advantage of the fact that it is the great day of the Community of Madrid, the politicians, led by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will make statements because there will be very little time left for the elections on May 28. In any case, the leisure options planned for these days are extensive. La Vanguardia reviews the main events prepared for these holidays.

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, has pointed out that "May 2 is a special date for the Community of Madrid, since it commemorates the uprising of 1808, in which the people of Madrid fought against the French occupation".

Several historical recreation proposals, which invite you to enjoy the street in a festive way, including the best music, dance, parades, the folklore of the Mayos and the chotis, will commemorate those historical events.

The Asociación Histórico Cultural Voluntarios de Madrid 1808-1814, will offer a historical recreation of these events on April 30 at various venues in the capital.

More than 300 people, horses and cannons will participate in it, it will include a parade through historic Madrid: Paseo del Prado, Alcalá, Puerta del Sol, Mayor, Postas, Plaza Mayor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Plazuela de Santiago and Requena.

Subsequently, the Uprising of May 2 will be commemorated in the Plaza de Oriente, which will conclude with the reproduction of hymns and the deposit of a laurel wreath on the commemorative plaque.

Puerta del Sol will be another of the epicenters of this festival. Thus, on May 1, at 4:00 p.m., the Musiko Moskas parade of the K company will take place, followed by the folk of Ursaria and the popular music and dance of the Francisco de Goya Association of Choirs and Dances.

Later there will be a historical recreation of the defense of the Monteleón Barracks, ending the day with a concert by Silvia Marsó

On May 2, also on this same stage, at 2:30 p.m., the Community of Madrid Choir-ORCAM Foundation will perform a selection of popular zarzuela pieces. Later, it will be the turn of the Efimer company with its stuffed animal street show, in which a giant puppet will delight the whole family.

The celebration will continue with break dance by the Dani Pannullo Dancetheatre Co., Spanish music and dance by the Arrabel y Raíces Cultural Association of Music and Dance, and the dance and flamenco show by the Las niñas de Lola Company.

Then, and until 9:00 p.m., you can enjoy the bagpipes of the La Dulzaina De Aluche School, the circus of the Alodeya Company and its show Son recuerdos and the concert by Carlos Talez, master of percussion and folk dance and a great ambassador of Afro-Venezuelan music. The day will end with a parade of giant puppets The Horses of Menorca.

The Plaza Mayor, for its part, will host an extensive musical program that will begin on May 1, at 6:00 p.m., with two concerts in collaboration with the Primavera Sound Festival: Ana Curra, pianist, writer and singer from Madrid who He became known as a component of Alaska and Los Pegamoides, and the techno troubadour Joe Crepúsculo.

Also for the first time, the Sesión Vermú music cycle will arrive in the capital with concerts by Amatria and the Solynieve Expert Group, in collaboration with the Youth Card.

It will be on Tuesday, May 2, starting at 12:30 p.m. In the afternoon, starting at 6:00 p.m., the music will continue with concerts by Rubi y los Casinos and Christina Rosenvinge.

Other notable proposals within the Vermouth Session, which will liven up the aperitif hour in various towns in the region these days, will be those of La Trinidad and Antifan; Frank Galvez and Dan Millson; Liquid Love and Irenegarry; Marcelo Criminal and Margarita Quebrada; Butane Love and Hate Confetti; Maria de la Flor and El Nido; Comic Sans and Comet; and Jordana B and Rocío Saiz; August and Lie; Brava and Lady Banana; Rococo and Biela or Monteperdido and Las Odio.

Likewise, 20 bands and musical groups from the Community of Madrid will perform in as many municipalities in the region, such as the capital, Algete, Arroyomolinos, Casarrubuelos, Chinchón or Ciempozuelos.

And Teatros del Canal will celebrate Madrid Community Day with Chotis siempre Madrid, an exhibition of this dance in the street with six couples who will show their skills in this traditional genre in two shows, at 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. , outside the theater.

The Lope de Vega House Museum will also commemorate this festivity. It will be on April 28, 29 and 30 and May 2, with concerts by four young women who are giving a lot to talk about with their creative projects.

The electronic revolution and flamenco jazz by Alba Morena; the sensitive pop of Gara Durán; the Colombian pop music of Lao Ra and La María, a new phenomenon of Valencian song, will be the protagonists in this space, flooding the neighborhood of Las Letras with rhythm.

Likewise, you can enjoy the Fiesta de las Mayas y Mayos, a festivity declared a site of cultural interest and dating back to the Middle Ages, on Tuesday May 1 in El Molar, where several Mayas will be enthroned on their altars located in the square and that will have the participation of the Cultural Association of Music and Dance Arrabel, with an exhibition of clothing, traditional Madrid dances and popular dance entertainment. For its part, Villarejo de Salvanés will celebrate the Canto de Mayos on April 29.

Within the extensive program of activities at the 2 de Mayo 2023 festival, we can find the Larreal Dance Gala, at the Paco Rabal Cultural Center on April 28 and 29, or the representation of the zarzuela La tabernera del puerto, by of the Spanish Lyrical Camerata Company.

For its part, at the Pilar Miró Cultural Center, La Tuerta, by the Compañía Nueve de Nueve Teatro (April 28), will offer the flamenco show Milonga, sonata y plata, by Marco Flores (April 29), and the opera Carmen in staged concert, with the Camerata Lírica Company of Spain (May 2).

At the Sierra Norte-La Cabrera Humanities Regional Center, you can enjoy a movie on April 28 with As Bestas by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and on April 29 there will be a concert of African music by Tam-Tam Fola, who the April 30 they will give a percussion workshop for the whole family.

Finally, on May 2, the Royal Coliseum Carlos III in San Lorenzo de El Escorial will host the flamenco piano of Pablo Rubén Maldonado.
