Bruno Mars has publicly announced and to the surprise of his fans that he will not compete this year at the Grammys. The decision has revolutionized the Internet, as many who had their hopes pinned on the singer and his new album, An Evening With Silk Sonic, released with Anderson Paak and renamed the Silk Sonic duo.
As if that were not enough, the duo was the great winner of the last edition, garnering four awards for the album's main single, Leave the Door Open, winner in the main categories of song and recording of the year. However, Mars has directly announced that he has not submitted the album to the list of works to be considered by the voters of the Academy of Music.
The song was published in April 2021 and, therefore, could compete in that edition while the album was released in November of that year and, according to the award rules, could only participate in the next edition.
“We really put all our effort into this record, but Silk Sonic would like to bow out gracefully, humbly. We look forward to celebrating a great year of music with everyone and participating in the party. Thank you for allowing Silk Sonic to thrive," Mars said in a statement released by Rolling Stone magazine.
The singer added that they would be crazy to "ask for more" and thanked the Grammys for their support in allowing them to perform at the last two galas. In fact, the members of Silk Sonic presented their project for the first time at the 2020 ceremony with a surprise appearance.
For his part, the CEO of the American Academy of Music, Harvey Mason Jr., responded to the withdrawal with a message in which he stressed that the Silk Sonic duo has been "a fun headline in recent galas" and advanced that They will perform at the next ceremony.
Unlike other awards, nominations at the Grammys are not automatic: record companies must submit nominations for their artists and, in the case of songs, choose which title from their repertoire aspires to be nominated in each category.
The curious thing about the matter is that Mars has been one of the artists most celebrated by Grammy voters, since in 2018 he won the album of the year award for 24K Magic, released solo, as well as song and recording of the year.
