Broadway honors musical theater with the opening of a museum

The Broadway Museum opens its doors for the first time this Wednesday and, how could it be otherwise, it does so in the most theatrical neighborhood of New York. It is a new attraction in the Big Apple that both travelers and locals demanded, since to date there was no museum that explained, in a comprehensive and exclusive way, the history of New York musical theater.

Through various historically ordered rooms, visitors can immerse themselves in this art and see first-hand original costumes, period dressers or old theater seats, where spectators settled to enjoy their favorite works. There is also no lack of details such as some of the masks that were used to represent The Phantom of the Opera in its beginnings or the chandelier that Les Miserables lit.

There are also handwritten letters, original screenplays, and audio recordings by authors who contributed to the genre, such as Andrey Lloyd Weber, Bob Fosse, Stephen Sondheim, and Leonard Bernstein.

During the tour, it is also possible to view mythical scenes from musicals that marked an era, such as West Side Story or The Lion King, and listen to some of the songs that conquered the public and that do not go out of style, such as Money Money, from Cabaret , or Let the sunshine in, by Hair.

In parallel, the museum also tells the story of the United States during the 20th century, from the creative explosion between the wars, through the years of prohibition, the Vietnam War or the fight for civil rights, without forgetting the moment when the one that blacks could finally get on stage and star in Broadway musicals.

Museum prices range from $43 to $53, depending on the tour and if you want a guide.
