The German automotive company BMW continues its introduction into the world of electric boats with the presentation of a new yacht capable of gliding on water and setting new standards when it comes to luxury and emission-free nautical design. Named The Open, this new electric boat represents the second collaboration between said firm and the German boat builder Tyde.

It should be remembered that the first collaboration between the two companies, called The Icon, premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May of this year. The goal of both with the new design has been to develop a larger and even more exclusive electric yacht, designed to meet the needs of private users interested in sustainable luxury vessels.

According to the design team itself, The Open is one of the largest luxury electric hydroplaning yachts in the world conceived to date. It must be taken into account that it measures 15 m in length and has a maximum beam of 4.5 m. She is equipped with hydrofoils adapted from competition boats, which contributes to significantly reducing energy consumption.

As its creators state, the sheets that make up the hydrofoils allow the yacht to glide on the surface of the water with minimal levels of resistance, wake and emissions, saving almost 80 percent of energy compared to a conventional electric yacht. . In terms of power, the boat will be equipped with a zero-emissions system similar to that found in The Icon.

Taking this circumstance into account, it is most likely that the boat will integrate a 400 kWh BMW i3 battery pack and two 100 kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors, which will allow it to start gliding on the water from a speed of 18 knots (33 km/h). In this position, the vehicle will be supported by a T-shaped sheet located in the bow and another horizontal double-strut sheet in the stern with counter-rotating propellers facing forward.

In this way, The Open will be able to reach a maximum speed of 30 knots (55 km/h) and will offer a range of 50 nautical miles (about 93 km) while sailing at an average speed of 25 knots (46 km/h). On the outside, it is worth highlighting the presence of a two-seat command post protected by a wrap-around angular windshield and a large rigid roof covered with photovoltaic panels.

We can find a communal sofa-type seat to enjoy the views of the surroundings in the bow area. The open aft deck area includes a dining area with seating and a table, as well as a sundeck and bathing platform. As for the interior, there is space for two people in a cabin with a large bedroom.

This area also has a small office space, a television and a fully equipped bathroom. The large entrance of natural light during the day is responsible for enhancing the feeling of interior space. The Tyde firm will be in charge of the production and marketing of this electric yacht, whose first deliveries will begin in autumn 2024.
