Blue lights in the sea of Pingtan Island, China

During these days, on the island of Pingtan, in the eastern province of Fujian, in China, the water makes luminescent reflections known as “blue tears.” A phenomenon caused by the presence of a bioluminescent organism that causes bluish flashes when it moves. The waves, splashes and any sudden movement that the sea makes produces this unique effect.

In this area of the country, the phenomenon usually occurs at this time of year, between April and June. It is something highly anticipated by bathers who, as seen in the images that accompany this article, take the opportunity to take photographs in the water and with the bluish light caused by the dinoflagellates.

This biological phenomenon is not exclusive to ocean waters. It also occurs in the Mediterranean and it is possible to see how the movement of water causes this type of luminescence.
