Barcelona City Council is fencing off the areas of the city's beaches that have lost the most sand these days in order to prevent people from passing through. The force of the waves in recent days left some infrastructure exposed, mainly pipes, and also some services, such as showers, bare. These situations are also occurring in many other coastal towns, such as Mataró or Sitges, for example.
Sources from Barcelona City Council explained to the Efe news agency that municipal technicians will not evaluate the loss of sand for ten or fifteen days, given that it is advisable to wait for the period of natural return of the sediments to land from the sea. In any case, municipal sources specified, if after those couple of weeks an accumulation of soil is observed at any point, the technicians will proceed to redistribute it, as is usually done.
The services of Barcelona's beaches are activated in this mid-bathing season, which will last until May 25, on weekends and on Easter days. These services will be expanded from that date, which is when the high season officially begins. Yesterday, Meteocat maintained an orange warning due to bad seas along the entire Catalan coast. Civil Protection, for its part, activated the VENTCAT plan in the alert phase due to winds of more than 90 kilometers per hour in Vall d'Aran, Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, Cerdanya and Ripollès.
