Ábalos complicates it even more

The Koldo case evolves in the worst possible way for the PSOE. José Luis Ábalos pushed the ultimatum from his party leadership to the end and joined the mixed group after flatly refusing to hand over the deputy's certificate as required. The PSOE immediately suspended him from membership and initiated the file for his expulsion.

Not even in his wildest dreams could Alberto Núñez Feijóo imagine that, after the electoral victory of the PP in Galicia, this time bomb would explode within the PSOE. It is no longer just about the political and judicial consequences of the alleged illicit use of Koldo García, Ábalos' trusted man, but also about the loss of a deputy in the slim majority that Sánchez has in Congress and who, furthermore, is not not just anyone, but one of the people you most trusted in the past. Listening to Ábalos this morning facing his new role, now in the mixed group – “I face all the political power, from one side and the other, and I have to do it alone,” he stated – was reminiscent of the situation shared with the Sánchez himself in 2016 when they began the reconquest of the party and the government. Despite assuming this role of victim, the PSOE did not show him the exit door because it considered him corrupt, but rather because it did not control and monitor the activities of his advisor Koldo García.

This unexpected gift will surely be taken advantage of by Feijóo in this morning's control session in Congress and he will no longer need to resort to the amnesty refrain. The PSOE had based its speech against the popular party on its impeccable history free of corruption cases. Added to the doubts generated by the illicit enrichment of those involved in this plot is the effect that a historical figure like Ábalos feels in the mixed group.

And the crisis occurs when the March 7 deadline to approve the Amnesty law runs out, which puts the budget project and the consolidation of the legislature at stake. Koldo's torpedo has exploded in the worst possible way for the PSOE. Sánchez, facing the most difficult yet.
