At least 12 dead and 29 injured when a bus fell through a gorge in India

At least 12 people died and another 29 were injured this Saturday after the bus they were traveling in fell into a gorge in western India, where rescue teams have moved to help the victims.

The accident took place early this morning when the bus crashed down a road in a mountainous area located in the city of Khopoli, in the western state of Maharashtra, an officer from the Raigad district police, Harishchandra, told EFE. Manerkar.

As a result, 12 people died and another 29 were injured, the official said.

At the moment the causes that could have caused this accident are unknown and an investigation has been opened to clarify what happened, while the relief teams traveled to the area to help those affected.

The Maharashtra government headquarters office expressed its condolences to the victims on Twitter and announced financial compensation of 500,000 rupees (about $6,100) to the relatives of the deceased.

Traffic accidents are common in India due to the poor condition of the roads, the precarious conditions of some vehicles and the lack of respect for traffic regulations.

In one of the worst recent incidents of its kind, 25 people were killed and 20 others injured after a bus plunged down a 500-meter-deep gorge last October.

In 2020, 131,714 people were killed in India and more than 348,279 injured in some 366,138 car accidents, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Road and Highway Transport.
