Artificial intelligence is also making its way into urban electric bikes

The electric bicycle market is being renewed at breakneck speed with the emergence of dozens of models with a diversity of designs, styles and features. The companies seek to surprise cycling fans with groundbreaking and original vehicles that stand out from the competition.

The latest manufacturer to join this trend is Smalo, a Californian brand not yet very well known but which has the support of Besv, a firm that already has a good level of prestige, with several recent awards behind it for its innovative products. .

The new premium machine designed by Smalo is the revolutionary PX2 electric bicycle which, like its predecessor, the LX2, wants to take advantage of the potential of artificial intelligence to offer an unmatched riding experience. And, incidentally, mark the future of urban cycling.

The first thing that catches your attention is the striking and futuristic appearance of the bike's frame design. The explanation given by the brand for having opted for such a disparate structure is that it wanted to optimize driving so that maneuvers in open traffic are as agile as possible.

Apart from achieving a compact size, this agility is achieved thanks to a total weight of 21 kg, slightly less than the average weight of many electric bicycles on the market. So, it is light and small enough to put it in the elevator without problems or climb a flight of stairs.

Another highlight of the frame is the comfort it provides, since the bike includes two suspension systems. In the front part, we find a fork that absorbs the irregularities of the terrain and in the rear part a shock absorber has been integrated, which provides an off-road bicycle feel to trips around the city.

However, the differential element of the PX2 is the intelligent driving mode patented by Smalo. This is where the whole AI part comes into play, which makes the bike offer the perfect engine power at all times thanks to a specific torque sensor. Thanks to it, the behavior of the engine adapts to the terrain being ridden on without the cyclist having to do anything to adjust it.

It has a 250 W motor in the rear hub and a 365 Wh battery with the capacity to travel up to 80 kilometers, more than enough for daily urban trips. The battery is fully recharged from 0 to 100% in 3 hours and 20 minutes. If you start recharging at 20%, you will only need to invest 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Returning to the aesthetics of the bike, the battery is perfectly integrated into a structure that imitates the shape of a small bag found just below the top tube and along the down tube. As for the rest of the equipment, it incorporates an integrated night light, hydraulic brakes for quick and controlled stops, an innovative electronic locking system and locator in case of theft.

The latter is carried out through a mobile application developed by Smalo that also offers monitoring of the main parameters of the electric bike, such as battery autonomy or an interesting route planner, among other aspects.

The first units of the modern PX2, which costs 2,400 euros, will begin to be delivered in 2024. You can see, in the following video, the new electric mobility technology that Smalo draws from its older brother Besv.
