This week ERC has taken to trying to clear up doubts. First, he has cut short the rumors about a possible competition between Pere Aragonès and Oriol Junqueras for the next Catalan elections that have so eroded the republican formation. The president of the Generalitat has all the numbers to repeat as number one. Today, at the party's national council, the leadership will propose his name. It has the endorsement of Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira. And secondly, Aragonès has once again insisted on the idea that the Catalan elections be held next year.
That is the intention, although the Government and ERC admit that to comply with it they would have to have the Parliament's approval of the new budgets. However, in the party they assume that the numbers will be supported. They should count on the PSC, since, according to Esquerra, the general accounts of the State are linked to the approval of the Catalan ones. Without some there are no others.
Aragonès has drawn the Catalan elections on the horizon, but also that of Junqueras and Rovira, the first, waiting for the amnesty, still disqualified after the ruling of the Supreme Court in October 2019, and the general secretary, in Switzerland since March of 2018. “Some of us take on the work from the institutions, but in tomorrow's pages there will be glorious pages written by Oriol Junqueras. New colleagues will have to take up the pen and I am convinced that it will be up to Marta and Oriol to write new pages of victories” for Catalonia, the head of the Government has assured.
Junqueras and Aragonès have exhibited harmony. The president of ERC spoke briefly at the beginning of the national council meeting. "Today is a day of joy," he stated as soon as he began his parliament, and then noted that Catalonia "has the best possible Government (...) led by Pere Aragonès." "He is the best candidate to run again for the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia and revalidate the trust of the citizens in a second term," he stressed. "For me it is an honor," Junqueras concluded.
The president of the Generalitat, for his part, thanked the ERC leadership for its support and pointed out the need to "complete the work of the Government" under his command with a second term.
