An official injures 26 people by throwing grenades at a municipal meeting in Ukraine

A local official threw several grenades this Friday at a municipal meeting in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine, injuring 26 people with the explosions, according to the national police.

The images, published by the authorities, show a man entering a small room where several people are already sitting.

After a brief conversation, he takes out his pockets and throws what appear to be grenades onto the ground. Several loud explosions and panicked screams followed before the video cut off.

National police said a local official "detonated grenades" during a municipal meeting in Keretsky, a town in the region.

Twenty-six people were injured, six of whom were in serious condition, he said, adding that doctors were trying to revive the perpetrator. Ukrainian authorities have not mentioned any motive so far.

Many Ukrainians have had access to weapons since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
