Amazon detects seven million illegal copies on its platform

The e-commerce giant Amazon identified and seized some seven million counterfeit products intended to be sold on its platform in 2023. These are some of the data from its Brand protection report, which is made public today.

Since the pandemic (2020), when the online sales business skyrocketed, the North American company has intensified its fight against piracy. It has 15,000 troops globally assigned to this task. Last year, Amazon prevented around 700,000 sellers from creating fraudulent accounts to sell illegal copies (in 2020 this figure was around six million).

Jeff Bezos' firm uses tools such as artificial intelligence and data management to fight piracy. To detect firms suspected of illegal sales, we look at, for example, those that offer goods with strong price fluctuations, or that post low-resolution photos that hide the product logo, or those that externalize payments outside the platform to hide the trace of the operation. The counterfeits come from all over the world, although the company mentions Turkey and China.

Over the past four years, Amazon has taken legal action against more than 21,000 violators. Recently, in Spain, Amazon and BMW have jointly denounced a company that intended to sell brand accessories without authorization by imitating original parts. Amazon claims that thanks to its tools, legal claims have been reduced by 30%.
