Almond trees show in Alt Empordà

In a beautiful almond tree in bloom, pollination begins among the wind, among the dry fields. They are minimalist images captured in Llers for La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

These days the almond tree gives us this beautiful flowering, which in Alt Empordà is short-lived as it is a land with a lot of wind. Llers is located 48 kilometers from Figueres.

Its inhabitants suffered the effects of the Carline Wars and the Civil War. The castle of this town is declared a cultural asset of national interest.

Almond trees bloom much earlier than other fruit trees, which usually wait for the arrival of spring. The flowering of almond trees generally occurs around the months of February and March, but it is increasingly observed that it occurs in mid or late January, as has also happened this year.

One of its varieties has been cultivated for millennia to use almonds as food and as raw material to obtain their oil. The other, the bitter almond tree, produces seeds that cannot be consumed due to their content of amygdalin, a toxic substance.
