Alcaraz reduces the distance with Djokovic in the ATP ranking, after the Australian Open

The 2024 Australian Open has given Jannik Sinner the first Grand Slam of his career and, in turn, the opportunity for Alcaraz to close the gap with Djokovic in the ATP rankings. The Serbian, who was defending the title in Melbourne, fell in the semifinals against the Italian (6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4) and 6-3) and as a consequence now has Alcaraz closer in the world rankings.

The number one and two in the world are currently separated by 600 points, after the conclusion of the oceanic 'major'. The Balkan, who remains in the fight to reach 500 weeks at the top of the ATP list, has 9,855 units. For his part, the Murcian, who was eliminated against Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, adds 400 to his locker (9,255), after not playing the last edition of the tournament due to injury.

Daniíl Medvedev continues to be Alcaraz's main pursuer. The Russian could have climbed to second position in the standings, had he defeated Sinner in the final. However, it was not like that and the runner-up in Australia is content with third position, despite adding 1,210 points (8,765). The Muscovite is just ahead of Jannik Sinner (8,310).

Zverev remains sixth in the table (5,030), after Andrey Rublev (5,050). The Danish Holger Rune, seventh, advances one position, as does the Polish Hubert Hurkacz, eighth, the latter achieving his best historical ranking. American Taylor Fritz up three, placing ninth. The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas closes the top-10, after losing 1,000 points, by saying goodbye to Australia in the round of 16 against Taylor Fritz.

On the Spanish scene, Alejandro Davidovich is approaching the top-20, placing himself in twenty-third position. Likewise, Roberto Carballés drops back to 65, Jaume Munar goes up seven (75), while Bernabé Zapata (80) and Albert Ramos (86) go down. Pedro Martínez (99) returns to the top-100.

In the women's team, the Polish Iga Swiatek continues to lead the WTA ranking, despite losing in the third round against the Czech, Linda Nosková (30). The current Australian Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka, is second and is 865 points behind the lead in the women's world rankings.

The Americans, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, climb to third and fourth position respectively, while Paula Badosa, who lost in the third round to Amanda Anisimova (7-5 and 6-4) rises seventeen places in the rankings. The Spaniard becomes number 83 in the world, after the first Grand Slam of the year.
