ACS is awarded, together with San José and Puentes, the expansion of the Atocha station

Two ACS subsidiaries, Dragados and Tecsa, have become the firm winners, together with the Galician companies San José and Puente, of the 451 million euro expansion of the Madrid Atocha station, consisting of a new underground station that will connect the high-speed corridors of the north with those of the south.

This award is one of the most relevant of this year and comes months after its rivals Ferrovial, FCC and Comsa won another of the major projects of the national railway network, that of the undergrounding of the Rodalies R2 line in Montcada i Reixac, in Barcelona, for 540 million euros.

In the case of Atocha, the new station, tendered by the Ministry of Transportation, will have four tracks and two platforms, will be located in the Méndez Álvaro area and will allow high-speed trains to stop both north of the city, in Chamartín , like further south, in Atocha. For practical purposes, it will serve as a link to cross Madrid quickly when traveling between the north and south of Spain.

The project is presented as key to "connecting the high-speed network in Spain" and "making the challenge of Madrid having a large train station with two terminals a reality: Atocha and Chamartín," indicate the successful bidders. "The total connection of the northern half and the southern half of Spain's high-speed network will be completed."

The new station, which is part of the second phase of the new Atocha railway complex, will be included in the rest of the high-speed facilities, with which it will share a lobby and control filters to maximize synergies.

The work includes a large central opening with a skylight and a new façade in the Méndez Álvaro area. According to the project, it will serve to relieve traffic on Ciudad de Barcelona Avenue and other streets near Atocha.
