A student from Hostalets de Balenyà expelled for showing a knife to a classmate

A 12-year-old student has been temporarily expelled from an institute in Hostalets de Balenyà (Barcelona) for displaying a knife outside the educational center, sources from the Ministry of Education have informed Europa Press this Friday.

The events occurred before entering class at 8:45 a.m. and "there was no physical aggression" to any person, and the department has notified the educational inspection and has activated the violence protocol.

The boy to whom the minor showed the knife immediately notified the municipal guard controlling traffic. He addressed the student and took her to her principal's office. It was discovered that she had another knife besides the one she showed.

The Department of Education has activated the violence protocol and has notified the Inspecció. It has also made professionals from the Catalan Support Unit for students in situations of violence (USAV) available to the centre.

The mayor of Balenyà, Carles Valls, has told the ACN agency that there was no physical contact, something that has already been clarified by the Department of Education. And no student had to fear for his physical integrity. Valls explained that at the time when the municipal guard went to look for the girl, she was "scared" and "collaborated at all times." He has indicated that the minor was not aggressive and showed regret for what happened.

The mayor explained that they have handled the matter discreetly and "with care" as it is a case where minors are involved. He highlighted that both the municipality's social services and AFA are aware, showing coordination in the case.

The center's management has stressed that this is a "specific case" and reports that the events occurred outside of school and school hours. Even so, they have treated the matter as if it had happened inside the center.

According to sources from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the family of the student to whom the knife was shown has filed a complaint. And the case is at the disposal of the juvenile prosecutor's office, which will have to resolve this matter. They have explained that they have collaborated with the school and municipal entities to carry out advice.
