A drunk truck driver drives in a zigzag pattern on the highway in Alicante for several kilometers

On September 25, the Civil Guard arrested the driver of a truck that traveled zigzagging for more than 3 kilometers along the section of the A-70 highway that runs near the municipality of Alicante. The agents carrying out surveillance on the road noticed the presence of the vehicle, whose erratic driving style posed a serious risk.

It happened on the afternoon of Monday, September 25, on the A-70 highway, at the junction of the national highway N-338, within the municipality of Alicante.

An articulated vehicle, in an attempt to abruptly merge onto the highway, caught the attention of the agents due to its reckless behavior. The driver of the heavy vehicle repeatedly invaded both lanes, changing lanes without using the indicators and leaving the road towards the guardrail on both sides. This uncontrolled driving caused damage to both the metal protection barrier on the right shoulder and the median of the highway.

This dangerous behavior continued for more than three kilometers, putting the safety of the road at serious risk. The drivers who were near the truck had to maneuver with caution to avoid collisions, according to the Civil Guard in a statement.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the agents tried to stop the vehicle on several occasions, managing to do so only when the driver, due to his dangerous driving, damaged one of the tires, which made it impossible to continue driving. Once the vehicle was stopped, the agents saw obvious signs of intoxication on the driver.

The Alicante Test Team took charge of the investigations and subjected the driver to a breathalyzer test, the result of which showed a rate nine times higher than that allowed for a professional driver.

According to the statement, the intervention of the Civil Guard agents prevented a probable accident that, according to the circumstances, would have been of great magnitude. The detainee is a 36-year-old man of Ukrainian nationality, who is charged with one crime of reckless driving and another for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages.

The Penal Code establishes that the person responsible for these crimes faces a penalty ranging from 6 months to 2 years in prison, and the deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles or mopeds for a period of 1 year to 6 years. The detainee, along with the corresponding procedures, has been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction number 5 of Alicante, which has ordered his release under precautionary measures.
