Apple signs landmark deal with Nokia to use its 5G patents

Apple and Nokia have sealed an alliance that could change the technology industry. The historic agreement they have reached will allow the apple brand to use all kinds of Nokia patents and 5G technologies for its devices in a firm commitment to connectivity.

Both companies had a license agreement that expired at the end of the year, which with this new agreement is renewed and expanded. What the technology companies have revealed is that Apple will take advantage of Nokia's patents in 5G and other technologies, which will earn the Finnish company various -unspecified- payments from the manufacturer of the iPhone and iPad over a period of several years.

According to Nokia, this agreement reflects the strength of its patent portfolio, its investments over decades in research and development (RD) and its contributions to mobile and other technology standards.

"We are delighted to have reached an amicable long-term patent license agreement with Apple," said Jenni Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies. Her company will begin receiving treaty benefits from next year.

The specific terms of the agreement will remain confidential, although Apple's move for 5G connectivity is ambitious and demonstrates the US technology giant's commitment to this technology in the hands of an old market rival such as Nokia.
