Roma once again distances itself from the Super League project

AS Roma has once again distanced itself from the controversial Super League project. A few hours after the president of Barça, Joan Laporta, spoke about the participation of the Italians in the newborn tournament, the Giallorossi club issued a statement denying any negotiations to follow in the footsteps of the Barcelona entity and Real Madrid, the main promoters of the alternative continental competition.

"As was publicly reiterated a few hours after the ruling of the European Court of Justice in the case of the Super League, AS Roma confirms that it does not support in any way any type of project attributable to the so-called Super League," the AS Roma stated in a brief letter. Roma, this season competing in the Europa League.

"Inter, Milan, Naples, Rome; any team in the Spanish league except Atlético de Madrid, which has another position, Marseille, the three Portuguese with Benfica, Sporting and Porto, the three Dutch, Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV and two Belgians, Anderlecht and Bruges," indicated Laporta about the possible candidates who could integrate the Super League. Roma, however, has dropped out of the project again.

The entity from the Italian capital, fifth classified in Serie A, went further and specified "that it has never reviewed its position in this regard, nor has it held useful discussions to undertake a different path to all the clubs through the ECA, in close collaboration with UEFA and FIFA".

Roma's statement does not worry the organizers of the Super League, who have already warned of this type of denial. "Many call me to tell me: 'We say no, but here we are.' If you look closely you will see that many statements do not go against the format or the proposal of the Super League," said the general director of the Super League, Bernd Reichart, in an interview last December for La Vanguardia.
