The mayor of Badalona requests by letter to the Ministry for an urgent meeting on the beaches

The mayor of Badalona (Barcelonès Nord), Xavier Garcia Albiol, sent a letter this Tuesday to the Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, in which he requests that a meeting be held urgently to coordinate the urgent solutions and necessary to regenerate the city's beaches that have suffered the ravages of two storms during the month of March.

In the letter, Garcia Albiol points out that the meteorological episodes of March 9 and 28 have had a devastating impact on the city's beaches, with a significant loss of sand and a reduction in the width of the usable surface, which compromises the natural environment, tourist activity and, above all, the leisure and enjoyment of the residents of Badalona. Furthermore, these storms have caused cement structures belonging to old constructions to emerge in the sand, a situation that poses a risk to the safety of beach users and which is important to correct.

Given this situation, the mayor asks Minister Ribera to hold a meeting in which the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), responsible for the maintenance of the beaches, and representatives of the coastal municipalities of Barcelona that have also been affected by the temporary ones.

Mayor García Albiol reminds Minister Ribera that on February 21, a meeting was already held with the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, and the general director of Costa y Mar, Ana María Oñoro, where it was agreed that would work to regenerate the Badalona coastline and adapt it for the summer season. "If it was urgent to act then, after the latest meteorological episodes and seeing the magnitude of the damage that our beaches have suffered, addressing the situation now is clearly an emergency," highlights the mayor of Badalona.

In order to encourage the imminent action of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol has also sent a letter to the president of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), Jaume Collboni, asking for his involvement in resolving this crisis. In his letter, the mayor of Badalona emphasizes that the representatives of all the coastal municipalities of Barcelonès affected by storms must also participate in the meeting in order to reverse the situation in a coordinated and satisfactory manner.

Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol believes that "at this time, collaboration between the different administrations is key to addressing the situation and finding the best strategies to protect the interests and well-being of citizens."
