Territory adjusts the new Rodalies to the 'pacification' of the N-II in the Maresme

The Minister of Territory, Ester Capella, announced yesterday in front of the Maresme mayors the beginning, during the first quarter of 2024, of the process of public exhibition of the pacification project of the N-II road as it passes through the coastal region , with an initial investment of 90 million euros, of the 384 million that the State has committed. Little news for an investment pending since 2010 that has been updated and now also includes actions on the R1 line of Rodalies.

The mixed company that will integrate the Generalitat and the State for the management of Rodalies, in the case of the Maresme, meets the project of pacification of the N-II that the territory has been waiting for for 13 years and that had been to be reactivated with the liberalization of tolls on the C-32, which already led to the diversion of around 10,000 vehicles per day towards the expressway.

The train stations, with the new two-headed strategy, will be a transport nodal point, with more bus stops and elements to encourage the use of public transport. A set of unscheduled performances that Adif will execute with a total investment of 25 million euros.

The project to convert the N-II into an urban road will start on the Baix Maresme from 2025, when all drafting processes have been concluded. They will prioritize the links to connect with the C-32 before the own actions of pacification and improvement of public transport. This is expected to free up more vehicles on the coastal road, "up to 50% more", according to the minister, who yesterday was accompanied by the Secretary of Infrastructure, Marc Sanglas.

Six new links will be created in the Maresme and the existing ones will be improved, so it is estimated that 10,000 vehicles a day will no longer travel on the N-II. The new connections to the motorway will be built between Alella and el Masnou, Teià, Premià de Mar, Cabrils and Vilassar de Mar, Canet and Calella, while the one from Llavaneres will be completed with a new access to Girona.

Subsequently, ten new roundabouts will be built to fit the access with the C-32 in Alella, Sant Andreu de Llavaneres and between the two Arenys. In Arenys de Mar, the connection between the N-II and the expressway through the Valldegata-Draper estate will be reinforced.

Another priority is to modify the connection between the C-60 and the C-32 in Mataró, which now accumulates recurring problems of traffic congestion.

Another of the initiatives that the N-II project incorporates is to definitively conclude the dismantling of the toll areas of the C-32, where it is planned to install photovoltaic panels at several points such as the Santa toll Susanna or in the Parpers tunnel, in Argentona.

One of the keys to the pacification of the N-II, which will have only one lane in each direction, landscaped areas and wider sidewalks, is the continuous pedaling connection, the construction project of which is in the drafting phase, which it must be adapted to the roundabouts. In the case of the Baix Maresme, the layout allows the bike lane to be integrated into the N-II. In other places, such as Arenys de Mar, the connection is made difficult by the Musclera beach. In Canet de Mar, Sant Pol de Mar and Calella, the road will also have to be adapted to the change in topography. Designing the bike path between Llavaneres and Caldes d'Estrac is more complicated because the N-II runs through the viaduct. On the other hand, in other areas of the Alt Maresme, where the road is narrower and more winding, other alternatives are being sought. In all the municipalities it is planned that the cycle path can connect with the promenades.

The agreement signed between the State and the Generalitat includes additional actions to promote sustainable non-motorized mobility and encourage the use of public transport. The initial proposal envisages the creation of new safe parking spaces for bicycles at the railway stations along the N-II and at other points that are considered attractive for regional mobility. Likewise, it affects the creation of new parks
