The Balearic Islands will authorize the entry of minors to bullfighting after seven years of prohibition. Vox has presented a proposal to modify the Balearic law that regulates bullfighting shows to eliminate this prohibition introduced by the previous Balearic Government, chaired by Francina Armengol. The PP has already announced that it will vote in favor since it is one of the points included in the 110-point agreement signed by PP and Vox so that Marga Prohens was elected president of the Balearic Islands with Vox abstaining.
The proposition modifies the current rule and eliminates the reference to minors. In this way, the article of the law will establish that, inside and outside the bullring and in a visible place, a sign will be installed warning that the show may offend the sensitivity of the spectators. The reference to minors not being able to go to the square disappears.
"Those under eighteen years of age cannot have their access restricted to a show considered and protected as cultural heritage that has a positive impact on their education and participation in the cultural wealth of our country," the norm states in its explanatory memorandum. He adds that the law prohibiting minors from attending a show protected as an intangible cultural asset "could clash with the constitutionally established regime of powers" and that is why they defend its modification.
The previous leader of Vox on the islands, Jorge Campos, who is now a deputy in Congress, was mutated on at least two occasions for attending the bullfights that continue to be held in Palma in the summer months with his children. By then the rule preventing minors from entering bullrings was already in force. It was Campos who pushed for the PP-Vox pact to include the elimination of this prohibition.
Prohens partners warn of the possible unconstitutionality of this ban, but the Constitutional Court has already reviewed this law after an appeal presented by the Government. In fact, it declared unconstitutional a series of provisions on the regulation of bullfights, such as the prohibition on killing the animal, among other issues.
The bill presented by Vox defends that bullfighting shows are among the most participatory events during the summer months and adds that "young people, adults and older people come to them, witnessing this spectacle with emotion and devotion." He states that these celebrations "bring benefits to the population, boosting the city's economy" and defends that a good part of the citizens of the Balearic Islands "feel especially proud of this tradition."
