Nine out of ten citizens believe that something must be done to reduce political tension

Spanish citizens suspend the functioning of democracy in Spain by the minimum, 4.99, according to the survey on democratic habits released this Thursday by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS), which also reveals that practically nine out of ten Spaniards They consider that there is a lot or quite a bit of political tension and that something must be done to reduce it.

According to data provided by the organization directed by José Félix Tezanos, based on just over 6,000 interviews carried out between December 11 and 15, more than half of the citizens, 52%, consider that the political situation in Spain is bad or very bad and, despite the fact that seven out of ten say they feel favored by democracy, overall they do not approve of its functioning with a score of 4.99. However, the same respondents gave a score of 6.11 to the functioning of democracy ten years ago and believe that in ten years they will give a score of 5.23.

Almost nine out of 10 respondents (89%) are very or quite concerned about political tension and the same proportion believe that something should be done to reduce it. In this sense, 86% of those surveyed see it as very or quite important to reach State pacts.

Asked about the issues on which agreements should be reached, 93% believe that it is about fair taxation, 92% about the reform of the Workers' Statute, 91% about gender violence, 90% about the management of European funds, 88% on foreign policy and regional financing, 87% on the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary and 85% on measures against climate change.

By community, those most satisfied with the functioning of democracy in their community are the Basques, since almost 55% of them believe that democracy works better in their community than in the rest. On the other hand, Extremadurans and Catalans are the least satisfied with the functioning of democracy in their community. In this sense, 25% of Extremaduran respondents consider that the functioning of democracy in their community is worse than in the rest and among Catalans the percentage drops to 23%. The autonomous city of Ceuta deserves special mention. Three out of ten of its citizens believe that it is worse than the rest and only 14%, better.
