Illa rules out a motion of censure against Pere Aragonès or to force elections in Catalonia

The leader of the PSC Salvador Illa, does not contemplate forcing an early election in Catalonia or evicting the current president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, through parliament through a motion of no confidence. “I will not make a motion of censure; I don't have it in my head nor have I ever had it. Catalonia needs us to raise it together, ”he pointed out this Monday to assess the electoral results this Sunday.

Illa considers that ERC and the president should make a calm analysis of the results and believes that it would not be appropriate to "swipe", although she contrasts the decision of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announcing the electoral advance for July 23, with the situation of weakness in which the current Government finds itself.

In this sense, the leader of the PSC, has remarked that the call for elections in Catalonia is a power of the president, so that "he must make the decisions", although he recalled that Aragonès also "has always expressed his opposition" to this possibility. “We are focused on building an alternative and we are in no hurry. I respect his power to make the decision that he considers appropriate, but always putting general interests before individuals ”, he pointed out.

On the other hand, Illa considers the decision adopted by the President of the Government "positive, courageous, correct and deeply democratic". "It is neither more nor less than giving citizens a voice so that they can choose the path that Spain should follow", he assessed. And before these new elections, the Catalan socialists believe that two options are open: "That of progress, of useful politics and dialogue, or that of regression, sterile politics, and confrontation", Illa has differentiated. dilemma, the leader of the PSC has advanced that they will campaign to appeal to a "concentration of the vote in favor of progress, useful politics and dialogue."

The short margin of time left by the electoral call makes it impossible to hold primary elections with guarantees to choose a candidate, so it is likely that the previous candidate, Meritxell Batet, will repeat as in 2019.

This Monday, the PSC has met its executive committee to assess yesterday's results and to keep the electoral machinery running for the general elections. In the first matter, the possible electoral pacts are on the table, on which Illa has assured that she will not give any more instructions than obeying three criteria that, she says, her formation always takes into account: setting up "stable" governments, which are "progressive ” and “not to use any municipality or pact as a bargaining chip for anything”. In addition, Illa has assured that the respective candidates will be in charge of directing the conversations with the rest of the parties, under the coordination of the Vice-Secretary for Organization led by Lluïsa Moret.

On the table of the executive will be the case of Barcelona after the second position of Jaume Collboni, on which Illa has once again pointed out, as this Sunday, that his party does not give up anything and that he will put the formation of an alternative progressive government before the by Xavier Trias. “We are going to try it”, they point out in the party about Collboni's options to be the next mayor. “We are not ruling anything out. We will work for a stable, progressive government”, Illa assured.
