Felipe VI meets with the UN commissioner for Palestinian refugees

The king met this Friday at the Zarzuela Palace with the commissioner of the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, on the occasion of his working visit to Madrid. Today marks five months of the war conflict in the Gaza Strip.

After the reception in the Audience Hall, Felipe VI and Lazzarini held a talk in the monarch's office and exchanged impressions about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, in which a good part of the Palestinian population of this territory is displaced. by Israel's military operation.

With the meeting with the head of State, the Swiss diplomat at the head of UNRWA completes the institutional meetings he has held in Madrid with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, among others.

Albares announced this Thursday, after meeting with Lazzarini, that the Government is going to make a new contribution of 20 million euros to UNRWA to support its humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip. This expense is added to a first item of 3.5 million euros.

The Government of Benjamin Netanyahu accused several UNRWA workers of having participated in the Hamas attacks in Israeli territory on October 7, something that Lazzarini has refuted as there was no evidence.

This UN agency has been working for almost seven decades with the Palestinian refugee population, numbering almost 6 million people.
