Infanta Cristina and Iñaki Urdangarin are no longer husband and wife; the couple has just signed their divorce twenty-six years after their wedding, celebrated in Barcelona on October 4, 1997, and when two years have passed since the publication in the magazine Lecturas of some photos that uncovered the 'extramarital idyll of the ex-duke and his then co-worker Ainhoa Armentia. The magazine ¡Hola! confirms in its last issue that the ex-dukes of Palma signed the divorce in front of a notary in the Catalan capital in December.
A few days after the appearance of the photos of Iñaki and Ainhoa, on January 23, 2022, the infanta and the former handball player already announced, through a statement, that they had decided "by mutual agreement , interrupting their marital relationship", and emphasized that the commitment to their four children remained "intact". The signing of the divorce took two years.
The infanta was in Barcelona during the week of the Constitution Bridge and on the 21st, 22nd and 27th of December, and everything indicates that it was these last days when Iñaki and Cristina signed the dissolution of their marriage by mutual agreement. The divorce obliges the parties to cover the common expenses of their four children, Juan, Pablo, Miguel and Irene, but excludes compensatory pension and any type of compensation for Urdangarin.
The ex-duke has not had a conventional job since entering prison in June 2018 and has no stable income either. A few days ago, right after signing the divorce, Urdangarin went to live with Ainhoa Armentia in Vitoria in a rented flat in the same block where his mother, Claire Liebaert, lives. The almost two years that have passed since the informational bombshell have only confirmed that there is a serious relationship between the two. During this time the infanta and the ex-duke have sporadically shared the same space, but at no time together.
The ex-dukes of Palma lived a golden first years, until Iñaki left handball and set up, with Diego Torres, the Nóos Institute, whose financial and fiscal irregularities ended up taking them both to prison, and Infanta Cristina, in the dock. After passing through several levels of prison, Iñaki will regain full freedom in April, after serving five years and ten months of sentence, determined to erase forever his time in prison, his connection to the King's family and ready, with Ainhoa, to start a simple and anonymous life.
