Confusion over the victory of a trans woman in a women's race

As is known, the number 13 produces some indigestion to the superstitious. They understand that their mere presence will act as a bad luck magnet. That is why they avoid it, as did the organizers of the last edition of the popular Na'dalt race - a time trial at the Bellmunt sanctuary in Sant Pere de Torelló (Osona) - which celebrated its 13th edition this December 26 , which they qualified, as did the malaguanayat Ángel Nieto, of 12 1. Well, not in this way. And things went wrong at the last moment, when they were about to hand out the prizes to the winners of the competition. A trans runner (who had registered for the test as Quima D., although she is federated with a male name and gender) claimed the victory in the female category, something that generated some uproar. In the end, a Solomonic solution avoided worse consequences, although there were moments of tension due to the "aggression" of both the protagonist and her companion, the promoters explain to La Vanguardia. "They told us that they would report us", they say.

Nothing foreshadowed, before the start of the climb to the sanctuary, that the closing of the day would end in controversy. Once all the participants reached the top, something unexpected happened: a commotion in front of the monitor showing the final standings. "We were going to hand out the prizes when we saw several people arguing. Among them, a trans runner, who was wearing make-up, with earrings, a tail...", explain sources from the Serragrenyada Hiking Center, organizer of the event. "She said that she had won in women and that she had every right to be recognized. As an organization, it took us by surprise. It had never happened."

In the end, they opted for a Solomonic decision: they awarded her the provisional victory in the general classification (taking home a ham), but she did not make the podium in the senior women's category. Quima D. (who usually competes in mountain races and always as a man, in registration and appearance, at least until December 26) seemed to be satisfied with this outcome, which did not prevent him from a few boos from the public, possibly because of the attitude shown.

In this way, Laia Montoya (who had won the two previous editions and who at 12 1 had been behind Quima in the time table) had to settle for climbing the top drawer of the podium in the women's category senior

The organizers and the Federation of Mountain Excursionist Entities (FEEC) continue to be surprised. Especially because Quima had always participated in the races as a man, the same sex with which she is still federated today. Even on his runner file at ITRA (International Trail Running Association), which is responsible for evaluating and scoring trail running races, he appears under the name of Quim.
