Algeria, at odds with Morocco for decades, extends a humanitarian hand

Earthquakes go hand in hand with tectonic plates, and also with geopolitical plates.

Of all the aid offers received by Morocco, the most significant is that of Algeria. Due to deep political disagreements, the land borders between both countries have been closed since 1994, and in 2021 Algeria closed its airspace to Moroccan aviation.

On Saturday, in order to facilitate the arrival of international aid, Algeria announced the opening of its airspace to humanitarian flights to Morocco, a decision that yesterday was praised by the Arab League itself.

And Algeria has shown itself ready to send "urgently" a large rescue team. "Within the framework of the emergency logistical and material aid that our country is willing to provide to the brother Moroccan people to deal with the consequences of the powerful earthquake, it offers an emergency deployment, in the event that the Kingdom of Morocco accepts this offer of assistance, from a Civil Protection intervention team composed of eighty specialized rescuers", said the spokesman of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This intervention team is composed of a canine team specialized in the search and identification of people under the rubble, a rescue and search team, a medical team, as well as humanitarian first aid, which includes tents, cots and blankets

The teams that Algeria sent to Turkey in February after that earthquake successfully contributed to rescue operations and received international recognition.

"I salute the genuine position of Algeria to stand by Morocco in the disaster of the earthquake (...) this is the Arab spirit of solidarity, which we are pleased to see prevailing among the brothers", said yesterday the secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Abulgueit.

"Perhaps a reconciliation can be built on this later", he added.

The aid proposal from Algeria - like those from France or the USA - was awaiting a response from Morocco yesterday.
