On March 19, Father's Day is celebrated as every year, a festive date in some autonomous communities of Spain. However, as this 2023 falls on a Sunday, the territories that have that day marked as a "substitutable holiday" may decide to choose another day, in this case Monday 20.
The first months of the year are usually the time with fewer holidays, which limits the possibility of long weekends or bridges. Easter is just around the corner, but before that, important dates such as spring, the time change that will lengthen the days or the celebration of Father's Day still have to arrive.
The feast of San José is moved this year to March 20, but according to the 2023 work calendar published in the Official State Gazette, a bridge is not made in all communities. Only the Community of Madrid had that date marked on the calendar as a replaceable holiday. The next non-replaceable holiday and that will be at the state level will be next April 7 when it is celebrated on Good Friday.
In addition to that first designated date of Holy Week, the holidays that are not replaceable in Spain by the autonomies are May 1 (Labor Day / Monday), August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin / Tuesday), October 12 ( National Holiday / Thursday), November 1 (All Saints / Thursday), December 6 (Constitution Day / Wednesday), December 8 (The Immaculate Conception / Friday) and December 25 (Christmas / Monday).
The origin of the celebration of Father's Day in Spain is attributed to Manuela Vicente Ferrero, a teacher at a school in Madrid. Since 1948 she propagated that fathers also have an annual day and the respective gifts made in class, as mothers also had. She chose that day for being Saint Joseph, the father of Jesus of Nazareth. In other countries, Father's Day is celebrated on different dates.
