The beauty of symmetry: balance and balance

One of the most frequent reasons for consultation is facial asymmetries. It is a recognized fact that a beautiful face is associated with positive traits, increases people's attractiveness and affects factors such as social acceptance, professional success or the search for a partner. One of the most important parameters in beauty attributes is the symmetry of the face, a factor that gives balance and balance to the face of our patients.

Orthognathic surgery: the importance of symmetry

With orthognathic surgery we are going to change the face of our patients. And we are going to change it from within, without leaving visible scars. A face can be asymmetrical for many reasons, the most common being growth problems and the consequences of trauma. An exhaustive study of the face with facial analysis, photographs and CT scans will allow us to locate those areas of the face that present asymmetries and treat them. In the Maxillofacial Surgery service at Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona, we have specific software that allows us to simulate the different operations that we can perform. We can treat the nose, cheekbones, maxilla, jaw or chin alone or in different combinations, depending on the patient. The patient can see the different results that can be obtained depending on the intervention we perform.

Precise procedure without visible scars

Orthognathic surgery is cosmetic surgery of the facial skeleton. These are techniques typical of Maxillofacial Surgery that allow modifying the shape, position and size of the maxillary bones. Through invisible incisions we will make different types of osteotomies, that is, different cuts in the bone. After bringing the bones to the position we want, we fix them in the previously planned position using osteosynthesis systems. This surgery allows you to make very marked changes to the face without leaving any type of external scar. It can also be combined with other techniques that will allow us to correct the nose (rhinoplasty) or cheekbones.

Advances in facial surgery

In facial surgery, new developments continue to appear, highlighting virtual planning with 3D systems, the use of material manufactured specifically for the patient (PSI), or the use of guides that allow us to accurately replicate the planning that we have done on the computer. Other advances have been the changes or individualization of temporary treatment protocols and the use of new instruments such as the piezoelectric scalpel, which allows minimally invasive procedures to be performed.
