Teachers are updated to manage and avoid bullying in their classrooms

Violence in classrooms and bullying are a phenomenon that, far from disappearing, is still very much in force in our educational system, making it increasingly common to talk about it but equally difficult to envision a solution to a situation that seems so entrenched in our society.

It is not strange to consult the main national media and see that there is almost always news related to bullying, harassment and violent situations in class that should be completely eradicated from an educational and youth environment, but that continue to be repeated.

Susana Estudillos, Manager of Equality, Diversity and Social Responsibility at AENOR, analyzes it like this: “Every person has the inherent right to grow, develop and live in environments free of all types of violence in favor of their development. Unfortunately, this is not possible if there are manifestations of violence caused by intolerance towards some people or others towards what they consider to be different. The difference causes rejection and with it, discrimination,” she explains.

According to Estudillos, this violence “is a reflection of what happens in society, being clear evidence of the failure of all the people, structures, agents that are part of it, for not being able to identify, understand, manage and integrate the difference, as what it is, the own and natural diversity of the human being, on which to sustain and promote relationships between equals, between peers.”

However, the expert believes that we should not be pessimistic: “A lot of progress has been made in this regard thanks to the fact that the educational community has a clear commitment and strong involvement with the construction of school environments that promote the generation of optimal conditions for improvement.” of the academic performance and personal development of the students.”

But how do you prevent violence in class? Estudillos believes that there is a very significant key: “Act from an early age, and starting with the family environment, promoting the creation of school spaces where one of the main axes on which the learning process pivots is the establishment of relationships, among peers. Therefore, among equals, free of violence," he highlights, which means "educating in tolerance and to do so, deploying strategies to build and strengthen spaces for coexistence."

The legislation also advances in this matter: “Law 15/2022, of July 12, comprehensive for equal treatment and non-discrimination, comes to reinforce and focus on the obligation of educational administrations to guarantee the right to equal treatment and non-discrimination in education, in addition to urging public powers to carry out campaigns, elaboration, which would qualify in improving the protocols on bullying with attitudes of discrimination, intolerance and situations of hate, and all of this within the framework of the Coexistence Plan and/or the educational project according to the nature of the educational center,” he states.

“It is in this context, in which AENOR, in its purpose of transforming society, responds to this social concern, of promoting tolerance, developing the certifiable solution of 'Tolerant Educational Center', which leads the centers to the analysis of the causes and their consequences for direct intervention on them, from a focus on continuous improvement, thanks to the deployment of the Tolerance Management System in Educational Centers,” highlights Estudillos.

With this modality, it incorporates “the entire educational community (teachers, administration people, families and students), expanding it to the rest of the interested parties that can impact or be affected by the activities of the center itself, such as public administrations, associations. , collaborating companies… throughout their process.”

Teachers are also being trained and updated to address this problem with protocols such as the School Coexistence Plan, but there are other fundamental factors: “Teaching quality is a determining factor, not only because of their knowledge but also because of their ability to foster and incorporate training in values into their daily lives based on knowledge of the context, both internal and external, in which they operate, to contribute to the formation of the citizens of the future,” highlights the expert.

“At AENOR we contribute with training to the teaching community and management of the centers under the umbrella of the tolerance management system to generate spaces for reflection and to raise awareness, which is important to help them design and implement the necessary actions. to be able to contribute to improving coexistence in their classrooms, always based on their expertise in this regard,” he explains.

Ending bullying is not a utopia and should be considered a “priority” objective for educational centers according to Estudillos: “they have the responsibility of creating a culture and an environment that respects the dignity of their entire educational community. And focusing on the students, contribute to generating an environment appropriate for their personal and academic development, and for this, there is no place for any manifestation of violence,” he highlights.

For this reason, the expert is forceful with her analysis: “Education and Training are fundamental tools for the construction of an intelligent, sustainable and inclusive Europe, as established by the Lisbon 2000 Strategy of the European Council and the 2030 Agenda. of the United Nations. And it will only be possible if we contribute to this, among others, through educational centers committed to managing tolerance to improve coexistence relationships. And AENOR is the partner for this.”

Educational centers are increasingly aware and forceful of bullying and school violence, which is why they need professionals with adequate training to identify these problems and treat them as effectively as possible.
