Rejected the extradition to the United Kingdom of a Spaniard who stole the brush from the cathedral of San Pablo

The Prosecutor of the National Court has opposed this Friday the extradition of a man of Spanish nationality claimed by the United Kingdom for the crime of robbery with force in things, who could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for, among other things , steal the brush from London's St Paul's Cathedral.

The Public Ministry, in the hearing held, has indicated that the events are prescribed since they occurred in 2013. According to the prosecutor's own letter, it was on March 3 of that year when the security personnel who were working in the cathedral "discovered that two donation boxes had been smashed open and money had been taken."

Near where the looted boxes were found, they also found "a red substance similar to blood" and realized that the door leading to the garden located to the southeast of the cathedral building was open when it normally remained closed from the inside.

According to the prosecutor, the following day, an employee of the cathedral gift shop observed that several exhibits were in disarray, and later discovered that pieces of silver and gold jewelery with an estimated combined value of 2,096 pounds were missing. The police compared the blood found at the scene of the crime and obtained a complete DNA profile that belonged to the Spanish citizen, who this Friday before the National Court has recognized that, indeed, he perpetrated the robbery.

After her arrest, a search was carried out at her home and three pieces of jewelry were found in her bedroom that were identified by the gift shop employee as part of the stolen items. Once he was provisionally released, pending trial, the man did not appear to be tried, so the Crown Court issued the arrest warrant.

Today is. Chinchilla has indicated before the Chamber that although he was the author of the robbery with force, he actually did not use "a lot of force" because he only took "the money from the cathedral that was there." "I regret the facts but now I have a job -build efficient houses-, a life, I'm not 20 years old, I'm 33 and life gets older and you want to get out of all that", he commented.

During the hearing, the prosecutor insisted that the extradition request issued by the Crown Court of the Central Criminal Court should be rejected because the facts are prescribed given that between the commission of the crime in 2013 and the issuance of the European Order of Detention (OEDE) of December 2020, 7 years, 5 months and 20 days elapsed. "This exceeds the 5-year statute of limitations provided for this type of crime in article 131.1, fourth paragraph of the Penal Code," he says.
