New edition of the Vanguardia de la Ciencia award to reduce the gender gap in research

La Vanguardia and the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation have called the thirteenth edition of the Vanguardia de la Ciencia award with the aim of giving visibility to women scientists to help reduce the gap in the world of research.

Research that has women as first authors or principal researchers can qualify for the award. The research must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2023. The scientists who lead it must work at institutions based in Spain.

An evaluation committee made up of specialists in research and scientific communication will select eight finalists from the applications presented. The selection will be based on criteria of scientific relevance and social impact. The eight finalists will be announced on September 15.

As in previous editions, readers will be invited to vote for the research they consider most interesting through a survey accessible on the La Vanguardia website. The three investigations that have received the most votes will be announced on October 20.

La Vanguardia and the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation decided to work together to give visibility to women scientists since the eleventh edition of the award. The decision was made based on data that points to the lack of references as one of the factors that limit young women's access to scientific careers.

This objective joins that of giving visibility to the excellent research carried out in Spain, which is the founding objective of the Vanguardia de la Ciencia award since the first edition, organized in 2011.
