A six-meter-long basking shark pup appears stranded on a Galician beach

A calf of the second largest species of shark has appeared in Galicia. On the edge of the beach of Doniños, in Ferrol, this martes was found a six-metre-long male peregrine shark calf.

The deceased animal arrived at the sandbank on Tuesday morning, as detailed by the Ferrol City Council, dragged by the current, despite the fact that the Coordinator for the Study of Marine Mammals (Cemma) assures that its presence is not frequent in coastal areas .

According to Cemma, the basking shark is the second largest species after the whale shark and can reach 10 meters in length and four tons in weight.

The Ferrol Civil Protection personnel extracted it from the water to prevent it from being carried away by the current and tomorrow they will proceed, together with Cemma, to cutting it up for subsequent incineration.

For its part, several blue sharks have been seen this summer in the Mediterranean, both on the Costa Brava and in Menorca, Alicante or Valencia.
