10 characteristics of good leadership: What type of leader are you?

A leader is that person who, managing a specific group of people, is capable of influencing, motivating and making all team members work with enthusiasm, pursuing goals and objectives.

To achieve general motivation of the group, the leader uses certain tools and management skills, making all members feel part of the project.

All leaders choose a different formula to manage their team, depending on their personality. In relation to leadership styles, multiple classifications appear, but one of the most recognized is the one designed by psychologist Kurt Lewin.

The professor of the master's degree in occupational risks at the International University of La Rioja, Iván Fernández, who is also a Prevention consultant at Fraternidad-Muprespa, details the characteristics of the three leadership styles of the renowned psychologist.

The delegative leader, also known as “laissez-faire” in French (laissez-faire), is a type of leader who lets subordinates make their own decisions. This leadership style works very well when subordinates are capable people with a high level of motivation. This leader “lets things go” and requests “feedback” or feedback, with a low level of intervention and in a non-authoritarian way.

This type of leader monopolizes decision-making in a unidirectional manner and without the possibility of criticism or intervention by the rest of the participants. This leader determines the roles of the subordinates, the techniques, the methods to follow and the conditions.

Despite the negative connotations of the word “authoritarian,” Lewin explains that this type of leader does not always create an unpleasant environment. Criticism of employees is common, but so are thanks.

This type of leadership is mainly participatory. Unlike the authoritarian, this type of leader ensures that all members of the organization intervene and have decision-making power. That is, there is an equitable distribution of responsibilities.

However, democratic leadership carries some risk of loss of efficiency, especially when it comes to collective decision-making.

Training is essential to be a good leader and manage teams correctly, which is why companies always look for professionals with an appropriate qualification in this regard.
