Ribera de Duero, an ancient DO where Tempranillo reigns supreme

The history of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin goes back more than 2,500 years, with the presence of wine residues in the Pintia vacceo site and the discovery of the Roman mosaic in Baños de Valdearados.

For centuries, wine and vineyards became a fundamental part of the region's cultural and economic development, leading to the creation of the Ordenanzas de Castilla in the 15th century.

In the 20th century, a series of viticulturists and winemakers promoted the vineyards and the quality of the Ribera del Duero wines, which led to the creation of the Regulatory Council and the obtaining of the Denomination of Origin in 1982.

Since then, new cultivation practices and winemaking technologies have been introduced, along with rigorous control processes that have made Ribera del Duero a byword for quality.

The star grape of the region is Tempranillo, which takes on different expressions depending on the area and the winery in which it is produced.

In this article, we will collect three 100% Tempranillo proposals that demonstrate the versatility of one of the best-known grapes on the national scene and that are part of the Great Ribera del Duero Wines Selection by Gourmet La Vanguardia.
