How to choose the right footwear for seniors

Choosing footwear is a choice that should never be taken lightly. But it is even more important in the case of older people. With age, we lose mobility, agility and stability, muscle and joint strength... In addition, we get more fatigued and are more vulnerable to suffering from certain foot conditions, such as malformations, calluses or bunions. Circulation problems are another point to take into account, due to which our feet swell and are colder.

Consequently, looking for the right shoes for an elderly person should not be based solely on aesthetic criteria. In this regard, going to a podiatrist is a good idea to receive an assessment of individual needs. But, in general, there are a series of criteria that the chosen model must meet in order to be comfortable and safe.

The footwear must adapt to the way we step and cushion the footprint. To prevent us from walking incorrectly or excessive pressure on the feet, the shoe must have a firm but flexible sole. Shoes that are too flat should be avoided, as well as shoes with high heels. It is best to opt for a toe slightly raised from the ground and a heel of a couple of centimeters, so that the heel is higher than the tip of the foot. If there are problems in the footprint, an insole will help cushion it.

On the other hand, footwear has to properly support the foot and have good adhesion to the ground, to prevent falls and slips. It is convenient to look for closed shoes with good support, avoiding barefoot heels, which require more effort to walk. Also, the foot should not slip forward or stick out when walking.

Regarding the sole, it must be non-slip. For this, it is better to opt for those that are made of rubber with drawings on the surface. Smooth soles are more slippery.

We must avoid shoes that are too hard and narrow. Instead, choose stretchy shoes with a wide toe box to allow room for toe mobility. Go to buy the shoes in the afternoon, because the feet swell throughout the day and thus you will choose more comfortable ones and according to the size of your feet.

Look for them to be breathable and according to the weather, that they keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Also, make sure that they do not have interior seams, that they do not rub or cause injuries. If they are closed with velcro they are easier to put on and take off than ones with laces.

Finally, taking into account everything mentioned above, it is convenient to assess what will be the main use that we will give to the footwear in question. It is not the same to select shoes for a more sedentary day to day than for an active older person, who walks often and exercises.
