Discharge your baby: all the paperwork about a newborn that you must process

In the final stretch of the pregnancy, there are many steps that you must carry out in preparation for the imminent arrival of the baby. Have the hospital bag ready with everything necessary for the mother, the child and the companion, place the safety seat in the car, assemble the trolley, leave their room and crib ready, wash and prepare their clothes...

But childbirth does not mark the end of the procedures yet. Although you already have your newborn in your arms and the moment of care, upbringing and pampering begins, there are still certain steps that you must carry out. Since there are many procedures to be carried out, it is convenient to inform you well about each and every one of them, as well as prepare the necessary documentation to formalize them.

The hospital itself will provide you with a series of essential forms for the rest of the procedures to be carried out. Among them is the baby's birth certificate. If you are going to register the child in a municipality other than that of the birth, you must indicate this to the medical staff so that it is recorded in their documentation and a specific certificate will be necessary in this context.

You will also obtain the maternity medical report at the hospital, as well as the hospital discharge of the mother and child. Likewise, they will provide you with the baby's health document, which includes data such as the heel test, the hearing test and any specification related to her health.

Some hospitals allow on-site registration of the newborn in the Civil Registry, while in other cases you will have to go to the Registry itself. Registration is required within 72 hours of birth. It can also be done electronically.

If the parents are married, it is enough for one of them to register. In the event that there is no marriage union, both must attend the registration or sign a joint declaration. In addition, the presence of both parents will be necessary if the order of the surnames is to be changed or the baby is to be registered in a location other than the place of birth.

The baby must also be registered in the municipal register, in the town hall of the place of residence. Registering with the Social Security is essential to obtain the health card and to be able to assign a pediatrician for the child. They can be requested in person or online, at Social Security for the first case and at the corresponding health center for the health card.

In addition to those already mentioned, you must process the maternity and/or paternity leave permits at the Social Security. It is also convenient to inform you about the available aid, such as maternity aid, aid for single-parent families, large family certificate, or child aid.
