7 wines from places where Carnival is taken very seriously

Venice, Sitges, Tenerife, Cádiz and Badajoz are places where, in addition to celebrating Carnival in style, great wines are made. The sommelier Maria José Huertas selects seven bottles that are very different from each other, but highly recommended, which pair very well with these holidays or with any time when we feel like having a good glass of wine.

In Sitges they do not forgive this party and celebrate it in style. This particular, pleasant, fragrant and fresh wine would be a great success. Its aging for 4 months in a natural clay amphora gives it very particular characteristics. Sincere wines with minimal intervention from the hand of Ignasi Seguí. The wine gives off aromas of orange, quince, pippin apple, and herbal and balsamic touches. In the mouth it enjoys good fruit in its mid-palate and is vibrant thanks to good acidity and slight bitterness in the finish.

Venice is always a dream place and Carnival is its moment of maximum effervescence. With an orange wine of ancestral origin we will add more color if possible to the festival. This Malvasia is of Hellenic origin, very ancient and is found between Italy and Slovenia. Its long maceration with the skins gives it aromas of citrus, dried flowers, white fruit, field herbs and spices. The palate is fresh, broad and with a slightly bitter and long finish.

To season Cadiz carnivals this wonderful natural sweet wine. In its production, the grapes are sun-dried and aged oxidatively through the criaderas and soleras system for a minimum of 8 years. The result is a mahogany-colored jewel with a sweet nose, which is the essence of the variety itself. Notes of raisins, dried apricots, dried fruits, hints of coffee and sweet spices. Very wide mouth with a well-balanced sweetness.

We continue with a surprising Tenerife wine, since it is sparkling. Perfect bet for such a great celebration. Enrique Alfonso is responsible for safeguarding this wine where joviality, elegance is sought and is sustained by vertical acidity. It displays notes of apple, dried flowers, citrus touches and dried fruits. In his mouth a crunchy bubble pulsates throughout its entire length.

In Badajoz Carnival is very celebrated and what better way to enjoy it than with a wine from the Matanegra region. It is a very juicy red in the mouth, with polished and delicious tannins. The nose concentrates fruit, highlighting strawberry and plum, olive, licorice, violets and slightly smoky due to its fine wood. The aging has been 12 months in barrels. The finish in the mouth leaves very pleasant sensations of bitter cocoa.

Greece is fervent during Carnival time. In addition to architecture and culture, it offers us increasingly trendy wines with great personality. They are wines where the character and Mediterranean accent is manifested in every sip, as is the case with this white. We find aromas of citrus fruit, apricot, apple, floral and wet stone. In the mouth its acidity is vertical, it is enveloping as it passes through its stay with the lees and at the end of the mouth there are saline notes.

Another land very dedicated to Carnival and that enjoys good wines. This would be a red wine, organic, varietal and with a marked Mediterranean character. The vineyard soils are limestone, with gravel and pebbles. Great aromatic intensity and with different nuances dominated by red fruits, balsamic notes, aromas of undergrowth and fine woods due to its aging for 12 months in 500-liter oak. In the mouth it is tasty, balanced and with a spicy finish.
