Zara launches its first jacket made entirely from textile waste

The fast fashion industry has undergone a transformation in recent years with the entry on the scene of Asian giants. Now the so-called Spanish fast fashion must differentiate itself and therefore move away from that business and production model that once made them so great. On this arduous path to being more sustainable, designing higher quality pieces and achieving responsible production without raising prices, Zara has taken a big step.

The Inditex firm announced this Tuesday that the brand's first jacket made from textile waste and, therefore, completely circular, arrives in its windows. The piece, a black parka with a hood, large front pockets and adjustable sleeves, is made with Loopamid, a novel fabric obtained from textile waste from other garments.

The technology behind this fabric created by BASF allows polyamide 6 textiles - a type of nylon - to be recycled and then converted into new fibers that have the same quality as the virgin raw material.

“This collaboration is a great example of how, working together, we can use new technologies to transform textile waste into a new resource,” explains in a press release Javier Losada, Director of Sustainability at Inditex, who also considers this project a first. step to move towards a circular solution.

“This jacket is unique because it has two features, firstly, it is made of Loopamid and secondly, Loopamaid has the possibility of producing all parts of the jacket with the same material: the padding, the zipper, the buttons and Velcro," reveals Dag Wiebelhaus, Head of Global Product Innovation at BASF, on the same Zara website.

This is Inditex's first step to fulfill an ambitious roadmap for 2030. By then, the Spanish giant wants to ensure that all its textile products are made exclusively with materials with a lower environmental footprint.
