What happens to Desperate Housewives is like Sex and the City: critics fell at its feet, it focused the social conversation of a significant sector of women and it was a commercial phenomenon but, since its subject matter was considered feminine, there are those who prefer to relegate it. forgotten. Luckily, screenwriter and producer Abe Sylvia does take them into account if we look at the trailer for Palm Royale, his bet for Apple TV.

Maxine (Kristen Wiig) is Maxine Simmons, a somewhat naive woman who feels that she should belong to the high society of Palm Beach in 1969. The problem is that, a priori, the elite formed by Evelyn (Allison Janney) and Dinah (Leslie Bibb) would never give her a seat at his table: her clothes may be good but they are from past seasons (she steals them from an elderly woman in a coma played by Carol Burnett) and it is difficult to discern to what extent this cheerful woman lies more than she talks.

As the trailer suggests, the formula of Sylvia, who has worked on series such as Nurse Jackie, The affair or Dead to me, is clear. It is a comedy starring women, including Laura Dern as a feminist with whom Maxine comes into contact. The tone is intended to have drops of black or corrosive humor, as Wiig proves with a line of dialogue: “Girls, surprised to see me, considering you left me for dead.” And, of course, a little bit of mystery: someone could be a stiff at the end of the first season.

Alongside a captivating comedy talent like Wiig, forged in Saturday Night Light and known in cinema for titles like My Best Friend's Wedding, Ghostbusters and Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar, are Oscar-winning actresses like Allison Janney (I, Tonya) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) but also the singer Ricky Martin, who had started in the world of entertainment as a soap opera actor and who surprised in 2018 alongside Penélope Cruz in The Assassination of Gianni Versace , or Kaia Garber, Cindy Crawford's daughter.

Palm Royale premieres on March 20 on Apple TV with the first three episodes. The remaining seven of the first season, which has a total of ten installments, will be broadcast weekly on the platform.
