The latest changes in Twitter since the inauguration of Elon Musk as the new owner of the social network have given much to talk about. The new Twitter Blue system has been especially criticized, through which all those users who pay a monthly fee will be able to receive a blue verification like the one that until now only official accounts had.
To distinguish companies from those who have subscribed to this service, Twitter has created a second verification of gold color, which is designated to those large corporations by their importance. One of those that has received it recently is the public radio and television entity RTVE, although what has caused some controversy is the subtitle that the social network has added to its account.
For Twitter, RTVE would be a "media financed by the Government" and this has been included in a label on all its official accounts. The corporation has issued a statement to express "its total disagreement with the unilateral decision" of the social network when labeling them in such a way.
"These labels on the RTVE accounts on Twitter are wrong and contrary to the essence of Radiotelevisión Española," they stated in the document, reiterating "editorial independence as one of the hallmarks" of the public entity.
In the statement, RTVE explains to Twitter its financing method to justify the change of label. "It is financed through an allocation from the general budgets approved by parliament, as well as by two other sources of private financing", as it appears in the document, which ensures its "editorial independence and from the workers and workers".
In the corporation's opinion, the most appropriate label to designate the official RTVE accounts on Twitter would be "publicly financed medium" through the General State Budgets, in a similar way to homologous communication groups such as the BBC. Finally, the entity "hopes that this request will be addressed as soon as possible" by the social network.
