Porsche 911: eight generations of the most loved sports car

Launched in 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, over time it has become increasingly exciting and versatile. Originally there was only the Coupé, but other body variants and mechanical options soon joined the range. Throughout its eight generations, there have been truly relevant versions.

Initially it was called 901, but Peugeot already had the number registered for its models. In 1965, the Targa was released, a convertible with a safety arch adapted to United States regulations.

In 1974, Porsche used a turbocharged engine for the first time in a production car to improve performance and efficiency. The presentation of the 911 Turbo with a 3-liter engine and 260 HP caused a sensation around the world. From that moment on, the Turbo saga would be the star of all generations of the German model.

In 1989, coinciding with the 25th anniversary, a new generation arrived with the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 version. This technical innovation had already proven its worth in rallies. In 1992, the RS acronym returned with the Carrera RS, which was presented as a lightweight model.

In 1997, a historic turning point occurred with the fifth generation of 911 engines, the first with liquid cooling. It became a benchmark for the following ones, and was offered as a Coupé and Cabrio. In 1999 the 911 GT3 would arrive as the successor to the 911 Carrera RS. In 2001, the new GT2 became the most powerful 911 to date.

In 2010, the Carrera GTS arrived, a historic name, and in 2011 the seventh generation was born. In 2018, the eighth generation was the most versatile in history, with the S, T or GTS versions. And this year the 911 S/T was presented for the 60th anniversary.
