NFL player Sergio Brown arrested for the alleged murder of his mother

Sergio Brown, former player in the NFL, the professional American football league, was arrested this Wednesday by the San Diego Police Department, California (USA), on an unexpected charge: the first-degree murder of his mother.

The Maywood (Illinois) Police have reported: "The San Diego Police Department's Threat Management Unit along with other local and federal agencies detained Mr. Brown after an arrest warrant was issued for murder in first degree, for the death of his mother Myrtle Brown."

The 35-year-old NFL player had been missing since September, when the body of his 73-year-old mother was found near their home in the Chicago suburbs.

After several weeks away from the public eye, Brown was detained when he tried to cross from Mexico to the United States through San Diego, California.

"Sergio Brown was detained while re-entering the United States via San Diego, from Mexico. Mr. Brown is currently awaiting extradition to Maywood, Illinois, to face charges of first-degree murder."

In the statement, the authorities point out: "On Saturday, September 16, when relatives and authorities could not locate Mrs. Mrytle Brown or Sergio Brown, both were considered missing persons. After a brief search of the residence that the two shared in Maywood, Illinois, the body of Mr. Mrytle Brown was found near a creek not far from the residence."

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office in Illinois determined she died from assault-related injuries and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
