Netflix has a new veteran series to rock it with: HBO's 'Sex and the City'

They are for sale on HBO. The channel spent decades working from the fiction department to be synonymous with quality and, with some exceptions, the way to watch the series was to hire the brand's channel or streaming platform. Now, however, Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO, has no problem selling its properties to its main competitor. And the last series to be added to the Netflix catalog will be Sex and the City.

All six seasons of the sex comedy created by Darren Star will be available on Netflix starting in April. HBO Max subscribers who are halfway watching the series do not have to worry: the title will not leave the platform's catalog since they will share the broadcast rights.

In this way, Sex and the City will continue the path started by series such as Ballers, True Blood, Six Feet Under, Insecure or Blood Brothers, classic and recent HBO hits that are already available on Netflix on a non-exclusive basis.

The maneuver is due to two very different strategies on the part of the two companies involved. Netflix, which after the emergence of competing streaming services gave priority to the production of its own content, is now once again interested in buying veteran content from third parties and making a good place for them in the catalog.

The recent successes of Suits and Young Sheldon have proven to be very economical phenomena for Netflix. Unlike their own titles, with few episodes, these series allow them to retain users on the platform for many hours.

On the part of Warner Bros Discovery, on the other hand, licensing Sex and the City allows them to obtain a direct financial return from a title that their subscriber base has already been able to see and that does not attract new customers. David Zaslav, the current president of the studio, is clear about his mission: clean up accounts in the face of the possibility of being absorbed or breaking up the company to sell it.

And, taking into account the recent cases of Suits and Young Sheldon, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte have many numbers to rock this coming spring 26 years after the series premiered on HBO. With a little luck, this addition to Netflix will help boost And Just Like That, the sequel starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, which is currently filming its third season for HBO Max.
